Beverly Hills Spanish Style
This fabulous house is on a prominent street corner in Beverly Hills so I wanted it to be something special. This is one of my very favorite jobs. First, the homeowner wanted to make better use of the large front yard by adding a circular driveway and replacing a lot of the remaining grass with plants to provide color as well as privacy (Metrocideros, not mature in photos ) from the busy street corner and house next door. First we cleaned-up the overgrown existing palms, Tree ferns, Phormium Tenax and Giant Birds of Paradise and relocated a few. Getting down to business we wanted to use plants that could take low-water (plus we used gravel to retain moisture), had year-round interest and were artistic in design. The bold colors of the orange Canna Intrigue, bright yellow Kangaroo Paws and royal blue Agapanthus Storm Cloud work beautifully together on the side of the driveway with colorful accents of purple Erysimum, golden Diosma, Westringia Morning Light and Sedum Autumn Joy. But the real show-stopper is the front garden that features client-selected Bismarckia and Aloe bainesii, along with blue Agave tequilana, Phormium Maori Queen, the glowing Penstemon Margarita Bop, Loropetalum Sizzling Pink, blue Senecio (Chalksticks) and my favorite pink & lavender Echiveria After Glow. "Detailed Maintenance" twice a year is all that's needed to keep this garden looking it's best.
